8 Job Search Tips While You Work!

The best time to look for a job is when you are already employed.

Here are 8 tips to help you discreetly look for a job.

  1. Search your company’s jobs database first. If your current employer is posting jobs they are probably searching the resume database and may come across your resume. Ensure your resume is up to date with your most recent and relevant skills and experience.
  2. Don’t answer blind ads. Be wary – it might just be from your current employer. If you respond, there might be another job opening at your office – yours.
  3. Don’t use your company e-mail. Use a personal/confidential email like hotmail.com or gmail.com for all correspondence.
  4. Don’t give out your company voicemail box. Use your mobile phone voicemail function (or add one). Alternatively, use an answering machine for your home phone and advertise that number only. Do make sure you answering message is professional!
  5. Never do your job search on company time. It is a form of ‘stealing’ from your employer. It is also not appropriate to use office resources of your present employer, such as stationery, postage, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.
  6. Schedule interviews during “off time”. Schedule interviews and make phone calls early in the morning, at lunchtime, during evenings and weekends. Use holiday time or personal days to carry out your job search.
  7. Provide referees outside the company. Select people who have recently left the company. Ensure that you first call them and explain how important their confidentiality is to your job search. Tell the potential employer you will give current references when a firm job offer is made.
  8. Consider using Head Hunters. Headhunters work with discretion and know where confidential jobs are located. They are hired by an organization to find exactly the right person to fit the company’s needs. Most headhunters should have specific knowledge in the field they recruit for, however be warned – many recruiters/headhunters are hired mostly for their sales abilities. Be smart and shop around – try and use a person who has been referred to you.

Part of the entire job search process is knowing how to set specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely goals to improve your career. If you do not create a positive plan to achieve something, you will probably end up with nothing, or certainly achieve well below your potential. Begin today by setting smart goals to compliment your career needs that will motivate and inspire you. Once you realize the advantages of goal setting you will see things starting to happen and you will receive a great sense of achievement which will create and influence other areas in your life.

Statistical Evidence

Harvard class of 1954 were measured those who made goals and those who did not. Each time they grouped the goal-oriented graduates into finer and finer groups … those who made goals every now and then, on a yearly basis, and on a monthly, weekly or daily basis, each finer subset of individuals ended up making more money, having more free time and far more happiness than the others.

In surveying salespeople they’ve found that 6 out of 10 do not set outcome-based goals at all and this group earns the least amount of all salespeople! 3 out of 10 set earnings goals and as in the Harvard study, this group of folks earns double the income of the no-goals group. Only 1 in 10 people sets specific goals but they earn 3 times as much as those who set no goals at all.

Any coach will tell you, the first step to success is knowing what you want to achieve. Setting career goals is just as important.After brainstorming and getting a clear objective about what you desire, write down your goal in an inspiring and fun way, that way you will be motivated towards your outcome every time you read it. And be SMART:

Specific:
  • Well defined
  • Clear to anyone else reading your goal
Measurable:
  • Know if the goal is obtainable
  • Know how far away completion is
  • Know when it has been achieved
Achievable:
  • Know when it has been achieved
Realistic:
  • Within the availability of resources, knowledge and time
Time Frame:
  • Enough time to achieve the goal
  • Not too much time, which can let you drag out performance
